Willard Melvin: Juvenile Record

James Willard Melvin was born 13 May 1906 Santa Barbara, CA to James A Melvin & Lida (Lydia) Jordan. He went by Willard.

Inmate #3403 Whittier Reform School
Crime: Grand Larceny
Rec: 11 March 1919
Age: 12

He stole $40 from his mother and bought a watch for $4.50, a flashlight for $1.20 and a bicycle for $6.50, the rest of the money was recovered. His parents were separated and his mother was severely deaf and on state aid.

He would be placed two more times as Inmate #3569 & #Inmate 3657. In the 1930 census he is living with his mother and he is a cabinet maker in San Bernardino, CA.

on 15 Dec 1932 he gets married in Yuma, AZ to Virginia Krochlyn Conger. He is 26 years old and she is 21. They live out the rest of their lives mostly in Riverside & Napa, CA. His wife was a bookkeeper and he was a machinist.

Willard died 17 Dec 1998 in Las Vegas, AZ and Virginia died 5 May 1996 in California. I did not find any children for them.

I did find these newspaper articles from his juvenile days:

21 Jan 1921
San Bernardino, California

21 Sep 1919
San Bernardino, California

14 Nov 1921

San Bernardino, California

He must of gotten his life together for some reason or another, or maybe someone reached him, he became a man who provided for his mother and then his wife.

His father James dies in 1953 and his mother dies in 1943.
