The Babies of Sing Sing: Newman Raymond, Thomas Gilbride, Amerigo Angelini, & Ray Orley

This story is a sad one, these boys were so young, here is their story.

Amerigo Angelini was born 11 Nov 1914 in New York City to Alfred Angelini (1888-1922) and Filomena Garofalo (1883-1975).  He was the 5th child of 6.

In 1935 he and some buddies robbed a luggage store on 5th Ave in New York City. The police caught them and trapped them and there was unfortunately a shoot out. A police officer was killed, Patrolman James Killion, the fatal shot was by Ray Orley. They were arrested and tried and sent to Sing Sing to be executed.

Ray Orley was born 28 May 1913 in Bessamer, Michigan to Michael Orlikoski (1886-1917) and Christina Gayan (1895-1965).
He was the middle child of three.

Thomas Gilbride born 25 Jun 1915 in New York to Daniel Gilbride (1887-1945) and Jennie Rooney (1890-1920). He was 2nd oldest out of 4 children. His father remarried to Catherine ) O'Shaunnesy
and had 2 more son's.

Newman Raymond was born 22 Oct 1913 in River Edge, New Jersey to Maj. Newman Hall Raymond (1869-1953) and Annie G Webb (1873-1920). He was the youngest of 9 kids.

I found a document for his father's Military Record

I found the following newspaper articles.

Add caption

On 11 Jan 1936 four young men ages 20 and 21 all walked to the electric chair.  Newman Raymond's father want to walk with his son to the chair and officials refused his request, The young man said a prayer as the hood covered his head. Ray Orley's mom was notified just moments before the execution, Ray mumbled a prayer quietly under his breath.

Did they get a fair trial???
Was the verdict harsh???

All I can say is 4 young men made a wrong choice and paid dearly for as well as their families.

Patrolman James Killion

He had a wife named Helen
He was born about 1904 in New York to James Killion & Kate.

He was the 5th child of 8.

Everyone lost.
