Roy T Mejia I couldn't find a memorial for him. He died 16 Jan 1995 in Baton Rouge, LA. This story was really sad and there are more questions than answers. I believe Roy died in prison.

Where did you find info that Roy T. Mejia died in 1995?
ReplyDeleteWhere can we find his obituary?
DeleteAncestry
ReplyDeleteI'd like to know about the years of birth of her and her children and the years of their deaths. I was told the whole story by a couple of the arresting officers. So please check these dates again of birth and death. From what I was told they were all murdered on the same date. The little boy was the last to die. It was a hideous crime. So horrible to even think another human being could be so cruel and evil.
DeleteRoy did die in prison. I spoke to him there about a year before his death. He used to make the most beautiful wind directories, out of wood, brass and cloth. They were round and presented 4 small sailboats which would turn to the direction the wind was coming from. I saw him the morning the dumped the bodies just past Leeville, LA., off of LA 1. I worked for the sheriff's office during that time and he was coming off the shell road, onto LA 1 at the time. Our eyes met as he crossed in front of me. At the time I was not aware of the murders. I spoke to Roy in Angola but never mentioned that to him. He was a pleasant person to speak to and we didn't speak of the murders. I am very old now, 82 and still recall that in speaking to and seeing him, he did not appear to be one who would murder.
ReplyDeleteThank you ever so much for this, I love the story I will make sure to do the corrections this weekend and add it.
DeleteRoy was my Uncle, my Father's Brother. When I was a kid, Uncle Roy would call our house from prison. My Dad would refuse the collect calls. My Dad's sisters stayed mad at my Dad for not going to see Roy in prison. He died in prison from cancer.
DeleteMy name is Mayan Michael Mejia. Born under the name Rebekah Lynne Mejia. Born to Philip Bernardo Mejia and Linda Mejia.
Any questions about my family, I can be reach at mayanmejia13@gmail.com
DeleteThank you so much for commenting, I appreciate it.
DeleteI'm watching Travel Channel's Ghosts of Morgan City - Berwick Bloody Four. I'm surprised I can't find a true crime book on this. Such a sad story. Why did Roy put kids bodies in triangle shape? Did he die of natural causes in prison? I'm surprised he wasn't executed given the time period and location. Why did he do it? This is what I can figure out happened: His uncle was living with or married to the mother and was also an illegal immigrant. Roy's uncle killed the mother's brother when confronted by him. Roy came back and killed the mother and 3 kids. And the sheriff being such a character adds a whole other component to the story. I'm a librarian and am surprised no one has written a book on this sad story.

DeleteI posted all the links for all the newspaper articles you may want to read them
DeleteThat’s not true. His uncle as was born in America. Born in Boothville, La. His grandmother was a Native of Golden Meadow, La her name was Rosalee Dardar. His grandfather was Rudolpho Mejia born of Guatemala. Bernardo “Bernard” was my grandfathers brother.
DeleteRoy was not illegal immigrant, born in Louisiana. Just his uncle was. This story definitely has many seemingly unanswered questions. The TV show showed a memorial playground under an interstate where the house of the murders was located.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing this, I will make the corrections.
DeleteThere is no memorial playground at that location. That was a prop for the show. I have grown up in this area & lived here all my life. I've lived in Berwick & currently in nearby Patterson, and have brought my children to that park more times than I can count. I've even intentionally gone there with others to search for this memorial they showed after the show aired, thinking that perhaps they put one up at the time they filmed, but there's nothing there with any mention of the family. It upset me to find nothing, because I always felt that there should be something there to pay tribute to them, & also that the show & locals would go that far to present a lie. That show exaggerated and fabricated a lot for ratings, as most of these types of shows do, and locals go along with it in an attempt to boost tourism, Just like they found artifacts just conveniently lying out in the open at a place that gives boat tours & is frequented quite often by visitors & locals alike, here in Patterson. There are so many interesting truths about this area they can accurately present instead of misleading people.
DeleteMy comments on here don't go through
DeleteI know the house they were all murdered in. I've stayed there. The house is very haunted but not the way most would believe. It's nothing but evil there and I think it should be torn down.
DeleteSad thing about those TV Ghost hunting shows is that they get the story then they only use so much truth and then blow it up with. Lies. Roy T Mejia was a very evil man. I see some of his family bleeding hearts over him with little regards to Barbara and her 3 children. One of the interviewing police officers told me that Roy described the murders. He didn't speak of the girls being naked. But said Roy showed absolutely no remorse whatsoever!! When speaking of the 11 year old buy he actually told the officer how he dumped him on the levee and when he went to leave the little boy struggled trying to get up. The officer said Roy Mejia told him,
(( I saw him in the rear view mirror struggling to get up. So I got out and used a claw hammer on his head. I got back in the car to.leave and I saw him get up again. The little B..... just wouldn't die. So I got back out of the car and walked back to him with the claw hammer and busted his head open. He just would die.))
My God if that child had only just stayed lat down until he was gone. But then again he was most likely so dazed that his body was trying to survive it all and he couldnt stay down. How could anyone be so evil hearted? For the people in Berwick its still one of the most cruel and cold blooded act they thing a by anyone could had ever done to another person. How about a little sympathy for Barbara. I'd love to read more on Barbara and her poor children. Nobody here said nothing about the uncle killing anyone. Only Roy.
Yes your comments are here
DeleteHis uncle was not an illegal immigrant either. His uncle was Bernardo “Bernard” Mejia. Whom he lived with at the time of the murders. Bernard was born in Boothville, La. Bernard’s mother was Rosalee Dardar Native of Golden Meadow, La. Bernard’s father was Rudolpho Mejia born in Guatemala. I’ve heard this story all my life as this was my grandfathers brother. So many misconceptions about their lineage. I wish I could find a documentary about this I would love to see this.
DeleteRoy was my uncle. My grandpa was his brother tito mejia. Who died in January 1984. I have alot of storys about him ive heard over the years. It could be a movie
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for reaching out, I know it probably wasn't easy. Yes would make a goos movie.
DeleteMy father is 1st cousin with Barbara. I am now 62 yrs of age and this still haunts me. Lucy was to visit with us (I was 8) for her Easter basket from my mother ( Lucy's godmother) I remember my mother terrified since he had just visited my aund very close to our house.
DeleteHe killed them because he found out she was sleeping with another man. So he killed all of them and dressed them in there Sunday best. He dressed them all in there Sunday best. They could not catch him he stayed living in the woods. They have an interview of my paw paw telling them you wont catch him till he leaves the woods for his alcohol thats how they caught him. His shoe were in backward so they would see prints and go the other way he was pretty smart just alot of hate. He was born in lousisana. His dad came to the us on a small boat from Guatemala.
ReplyDeleteOh my, thank you for this added information, helps see it more clearly
DeleteI talked to my grandma about it today I showed her this she said they have so much more to the story then what I put. She said he was evil u could see the hate in his eyes
DeleteThank you so much for reaching out, I know this couldn't be easy.
DeleteThe Golden Meadow, LA newspaper article stated nothing about being tossed in the mud in their Sunday dressed clothing, but that Barbara (mother) was found in under clothes, Lucy (13)was nude, Brenda (15) wore a blouse, and brother Robert (11)only in a shirt. Nothing was mentioned in this article about the children being laid out in a triangle, wonder where that bit of information was reported. Sheriff Murray Landry said everything pointed to sex as the motive. So was there forensic evidence found during the autopsies? Apparently that was written before they found Mejia, couldn't find any other newspaper articles.
DeleteIve heard the story from his my grandma and his other brothers about what happen. Never had a chance to hear it from my grandpa as he passed when I was to young. But I'm still able to ask my grandma what happen from what ive read in the news papers they left alot of the story out.
DeleteYou wouldn't happen to know if the murderer was a previous boyfriend and that's why?
DeleteOr was she cheating on her then husband?
Could you please elaborate, for the sake of knowledge.
This is genuinely out of curiosity.
Are you related to the Mejia man?
I have looked online to see when the Ghosts of Morgan City episode was filmed and not aired. I am curious if the spike in activity was due to a significant date. Such as the anniversary of the murders, the anniversary of Roy's death, Lucy's birthday, etc. Does anyone know?
DeleteNews reports were actually quite clear that Lucy was found completely naked, the little boy was found wearing just a shirt, and the other victims were partially naked.
DeleteHey cousin, uncle Bernard was with her not Roy. I have always heard that uncle Bernard was the one who did it. I guess we’ll never know. I remember how uncle Bernard was always such a liar. I remember just before he died we went to pick him up to bring him to the dr. He told me he was in the military and had a wife and kids in Korea which was 100% a lie. My aunt told me he had never been in the military and was never married that he lived with a woman who was murdered in his home. My aunt said she thought Bernard did it & Roy helped hide the bodies. Who knows the truth.
DeleteRoy was a rapist though so he may have done it. I wish there were more facts on this case.
DeleteI am sure some tact would of been a nice way to say I have errors...I will certainly take a look at it, thank you ever so much for your kindness and your comment, I appreciate it, as I am not perfect.
ReplyDeleteThe Berwick Police Department (the officers who has been there for many many years) could tell you a lot. Especially if you could talk to one of their ex-cops they called ((Yank)). You will find so much is not what others talk about. The little boy Roy told the police offices that he hit him in the head with a claw hammer. He was dumping his body off I think on a level. HE said he looked back in the mirror as he was leaving and saw the little boy try to get up so he went abd hit him again. Said he had to do it one more time to kill him. Roy said to the officers. The little SOB just wouldn't die. I agree with the grand mother. He was very evil!!@
DeleteI was at Bernardos funeral in Golden meadow my grandpa was tito.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment
DeleteDerrick Mejia "T-Ban" "Shorty" Or as my daddy called him the "Chicago Mob Boss" Benardo Delano Mejia is buried in the Serigny Cemetery in Golden Meadow La next to his best friend Lester "Smiley" Serigny, my late husband, he also has two or three other relatives in there as well Tito & Rudolfo Mejia. As a dear friend of his from 1981 til his death I can tell you for a fact that that man
Delete(Roy) wrecked his life when he killed his family. T-Ban as we referred to him would come to our home for the holidays & in general to visit & not too many times did he come that he didn't talk about his family. My late husband & T-Ban called each other "Cuz". T-Ban was the best man at our wedding in Raceland & we celebrated all the way back down the bayou to Golden Meadow where he lived behind the old Jack's motel in a nice house he rented from Jack Jambon on November 4, 1984 & before we dropped him off we of course had to stop in at Jack's (Restaurant/bar) where I was once a bar tender for Jack & my late husband & T-Ban were frequent customer's & of course we were treated like royalty the champagne flowed like water. Ah those wonderful memories. Anyway my children were like his nieces & he loved to play games with them. He had a game that he'd do with our youngest daughter (tickling) her under her armpits saying "I'm going to get your egg's!" I believe that was a game he played with his children whom he loved so much, he always spoke so fondly of them, he truly loved those kids & never got over their deaths.
I recently received a video of him at our home for Christmas in Larose as he was opening his gift.
We always invited him to our family functions, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, football games, wrestling pay per views as we'd always throw house party's for my husband's friends.
Sad to say that from that video I'm the last adult that is still living, my daughter's (only 2 of them at that time) & my niece & nephew & my goddaughter are the only ones that can enjoy that video.
I'd love to hear more of this story because it affected my dear friend that I've known since I was a kid.
My youngest daughter has been told if this story by several people & came to me tonight to ask me if I knew anything about this.
I'm so sorry that your family has had to deal with this horrible event & I've heard about the division it caused in your family.
T-Ban had told me as well as my dear late husband that at the time this took place that the sheriff of Lafourche parish I believe his name was St Marie or something like that could be heard going through the woods at night saying "Roy come out, you can't hide forever, you might as well surrender, I'm going to catch you, I'm going to get you!"
I've heard that from several people who lived in that area where my husband was raised below Golden Meadow just south of T-Ban 's brother " Bucket" or "Ticio" (TCO) Astucio Mejia.
I'm good friend's with Kenneth Mejia, his ex wife Rebecca Soley & a couple family members also.
I've always wanted to know more about the story now I get the chance to learn more.
I can only really get storys from my grandma and dad. I was born after this all happen my grandpa tito died 16 days after i was born. I was at a few funerals over there over the years after id hear all the stories. I like hearing all the stories some crazy some seem like life was alot easier. We grow up down west 225 street. It was all our families down that street my great grandpa was herman dardar. Katie his daughter married tito. My dad is gable. I wish my kids grew up how we did down there. I didn't understand till I got to school that Roy was our uncle they used to try and scare us with roys gonna get u. U better stay inside. Dont go in the woods. All the pics ive seen and stories ive heard over the years makes you really wonder what was really going on back then.
DeleteThank you for commenting and sharing with. I agree I love hearing the stories good and the bad, I embrace them all. Thank you for the additional information.
Delete...I came across this about thirty minutes ago.
ReplyDeleteGiven I actually have an aunt by the first and last name (spelled the same as mine), you'd imagine why this would intrigue me.
Such horrid in one person, the murderer of these people, and I hope he got the Lord's riteous judgement.
Oh it hurts my heart hearing of such tragedies, especially on Christmas Day.
Wish you all a safe and merry journey today!
Marry Merry Christmas!
May the Lord Bless y'all's todays!
She was with his Uncle I believe as the blog says...Thank you, you as well.
DeleteIt was not Barbara and the uncle. She was with Roy. The uncle lived with them from what was said at the interrogation
DeleteHe died from a heart attack in prison, He was my great Uncle
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for letting me know I will have to update this.
DeleteWow you wrote this on the 55th anniversary of the mother and her 3 children's murder?
DeleteWhy wasn't he executed for the Verrett murders?
ReplyDeleteHe should have been. What he did was unthinkable and so cruel. He even told officers he made Barbara watch as he murdered all her children. They said that house (which is still standing) in Berwick was wall to wall blood. Just splattered all over including the walls had blood all over them. He had her tied up and gagged as she watched her children get slaughtered one by one. They were all tied down and gagged.
DeleteThat house has not been in that location for quite some time. It was either relocated or demolished in the 1970's to make way for the New US-90 Bridge to be constructed. I was told by my grandmother that she was quite sure it was demolished, as few were willing to occupy it after the murders & those who did, didn't stay there very long. There is presently a park in that location, under the bridge.
DeleteI do not know, maybe that state doesn't have the death penalty, or he got a plead bargain.
ReplyDeleteI know a pretty good bite of the story. Bernard's brother astusio was married to my aunt Veronica Billiot
DeleteDoes anyone here know the Mejia relation to the Dardar's? I know Benardo was my grandfather, Delmas Dardar's cousin, but never knew exactly how we were cousins or if Roy was also related, as it was never mentioned. Always wondered if perhaps they were ashamed to say that we were, considering the circumstances. I've always had a curiosity about this case as I grew up hearing about it. I watched the Ghost of Morgan City episode that others mentioned, and from what I've researched and heard from word of mouth from family & being from that area, some of the story they presented seemed exaggerated and fabricated. For example: there is no memorial at that playground. That was apparently a prop for the show as I've brought my children to that very playground quite often when I lived in Berwick, & still do on occasion and have never seen it. I've purposely searched for it after the show and there is no trace of anything dedicated to their memory's. Back to my original question, I do know my great-grandparent's, Delmas Dardar & Pauline Dardar (Chaisson) were from Golden Meadow and later moved to Beers Island where my grandfather was born, until moving to Fairview Plantation in Berwick. I remember meeting Ben when I was very young, and he was a very sweet man who was wonderful with kids, from what I recall. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteMy grandma was katie dardar she was married to tito mejia. Our old street in Golden meadow. My great grand father was herman dardar the old cop from golden meadow. Owned the street of 225 court street he gave all the land to his daughters and sons
DeleteThank you so much for commenting and sharing with us
DeleteHis obit can be found at Newspapers.com
ReplyDeleteWhat name is his obit listed as? Is it under Mejia or Savoie?
DeleteI lived in Berwick when this happened...I was either in 5th or 6th grade...out of disbelief a murder happened in our town...I told my mother I was going to the library to get a book to write a report on the something..I went to the house and stood on my tiptoes looking in the windows and could not believe how much blood was everywhere. I wrote something up about it but never submitted it to our school paper. I felt for the kids and remember being so sad for them and kept asking myself why. From what I saw inside I saw rage...from that day on I said I wanted to be a reporter because there wasn't much in the paper about them..I'm almost 70 now, never became a reporter but I still remember his name in our quiet little town and the loss of those poor kids..I still ask why..
ReplyDeleteThank you for the additional information, as to why??? sometimes there are no answers.
