  1. I just found out I had a great-grandfather named Zacarias Bellhouse who married a Ma;y Mendoza and lived in Arizona. They had two children, Dora and Gilbert, my maternal grandfather.

  2. Looking at the Census Zacharus came from a family of miners. He was the only one of them that was sent to school and learned how to read and write. He then was able to become a clerk. I imagine Zacharus didn’t like the way mine owners took the lions share of the profits from his families back breaking labor. You see he and his family were Mexican/indigenous and given the surname of their employer because they likely weren’t allowed to carry their own surnames given the context of the time.

Zacharus was too smart for his own good and paid the price. His family moved out to California while he was imprisoned but some returned a few years later, Zacharus was waiting and they had a reunion. I hope times were better.

I am his great great nephew
