Strange thing is he killed Billy Miles but we do not know the exact date, he was placed in the Napa Asylum 1899 and was declared Insane, then he was up for trial and went to prison in 1901. His father born in Scotland and had lived in Georgia, before coming to California was a very well off man who was a Colonel in the Civil War.

Hugh Buchanan Jr. died 6 June 1930 there were no other convictions I found against him. One newspaper article mentioned his mother had said he had hit his head and hadn't been the same and after that took to drinking, which was out of character.

  1. Very interesting! I'm curious as to where you found the amazing photos of Buchanan. I'm doing some research on the patients at the Napa Asylum for a YouTube video. Buchanan's case is an interesting one. He killed Billy Miles in 1894, while drunk at a bar, with a pen knife! It seems his well-connected family paid one of the doctors at the Asylum to say he was insane. There was a custody battle between the Yuba County Sherriff, and the Asylum, for custody of him.
