at 4am on 23 July 1917 he entered the auto store of one McGregor & Sons in Santa Barbara, CA. He used a pass key for entrance and took 4 tires, 2 belonging to one worth $25 and two belonging to another worth $46. McGregor claimed 29 tires were missing worth $42 each and some auto accessories and $42 in cash.

Upon John's arrest he never denied anything and admitted his guilt right away. He said he entered the store over several months, he stole 18 tires in all and $43 cash from the safe. His tire thefts amounted to about $300. He also admitted he broke into a Kodak Store and took 2 Kodak Cameras valued at $42.50, which he disposed of in Los Angeles. John settled with McGregor in full two days before the hearing, plus 11 other tires McGregor claimed he took.  John thought if he coroperated he would only be placed on probation, his lawyer tried very hard to help him.
Through records it was found that McGregor was a close friend to the Judge (Crow) who gave him the harsh illegal sentence of 1-15 years. When the pardon came about it was found that McGregor practiced law in Chicago, IL for 13 years and was entangled in business in Santa Barbara with his sons, he played golf with Judge Crow and they became friends and were both members for the same Shrine. 2 June 1919 his pardon was denied.

John did get a new sentence of 2 years 4 months and as a result he was given a new inmate # 31761 San Quentin Prison and a new mugshot was taken.

John was finally discharged 2 Apr 1920, and was married 14 Jun 1920 to Veta O Coops, they were divorced by the 1930 census and he was living in the Baker Hotel in Los Angeles.
