The Warden even felt she should of been pardoned:

Under date of February 8, 1918, Warden J. J. Smith writes to Governor Stephens as follows: "This man's case has come to my attention and it is a very deserving one. I gladly recommend that he be given a pardon in the near future. He has an excellent chance to go into the U.S. Army, which, considered with his excellent record while confined here and his fine record since he has been on parole, convinces me that it would be only justice and humane to give him an out and out pardon. "If any man has earned one this prisoner has. He was a faithful worker here. For about three years before he was released on parole he was a trustee on the prison ranch, where he could have run away at any time. He has made good on parole in every way, now going on three years and is still working for the same man that took him when he was released. "A pardon to now allow him to join the army and to go to the front would be suitable reward for his faithfulness for the past seven or eight years I have known him."

This was in his records for parole.

Under date of February 11, 1919, State Parole Officer E. H. Whyte writes to the Secretary of the Prison Board as follows: "Alex Karls is on parole and as I wrote Mr. MacFarland, Governor Stephens's Executive Secretary on January 21, 1918, he has given us no trouble other than that on several occasions, it has been necessary to making inquiry concerning his monthly reports. On each of these occasions Mr. Welsh, his sponsor, took the blame upon himself. Every time we have made inquiry concerning Karls' conduct we have been advised that he is a steady worker and conducting himself in exemplary manner."

ACTION OF BOARD: Commute to 25 yrs forthwith 2/21/19; Commute to expire 2/28/19.

I did not find any brothers living in New Mexico, the newspapers got that wrong they were living in Arizona.
