When Dorothy was released from prison after serving 6 1/2 years she changed her first name to Diane. She was arrested one year after her release for theft.

At some point in her life she married Robert Michael Stafford (1906-1980). They had 2 children.

Rita was married four times. Robert also had a few marriages. Robert also had been in jail and prison for burglary. Matter of fact he and his mother were in jail at the sametime. He had been arrested for burglary and she was in for grand larceny, she stole some items from her employer, clothes and jewelry and cash. While they were in jail together she told him what her true name was and that she had killed her mother. In her own words she said "He took it like a man." He was 16 years old and this wasn't his first arrest.

Here's an article:

Dorothy died 16 Sep 1967.

She shot her mother because of a quarrel one of many between the two. Her mother didn't agree with the girls lifestyle. Dorothy had a fake I.D. and would frequent the speakeasy's and party with older men. Her parent were Norwegians who had immigrated to America. Dorothy had finished primary school by the age of 14 and had completed a year of business college, an education that was by far better than most girls in that era. She loved to hang out in Chinatown in San Francisco at the Jazz Clubs and would come home late hours, which became the source of tension between her and her mother. She shot her mother with her brother's .45 caliber colt.

The above photo is what the would of looked liked at the time.

After she shot her mother she packed a bag and took some cash grabbed a street car and went to 1047 Franklin Street and rented a room in this boarding house.

Her brother found their mother and called the police. After dorothy settled herself in the boarding house under the name “Dorothy Danrio” she went to a party of a boyfriend in the Castro District. The next evening she went to a show at the Castro Theater. She was a busy girl for a week before the police caught up to her.

Although she had told the police she killed her mother in a fit of anger she pleaded not guilty. She would faint 12 times during the course of the trial. She was found guilty of manslaughter and spent 6 1/2 years behind bars.

In 1933 she was in jail again:

Charge of Grand Theft and admitted to stealing jewelry and clothing and her employer Alexander Mooslin pays $100 bail bond for her release. Gets herself out of another mess.

Dorothy married a truck driver named Robert Stafford in 1936. The couple had two children and lived a quiet life for almost 20 years. They later they separated.

In 1955, 46-year-old Dorothy pleaded guilty to the theft of $2000 worth of jewelry, clothing and cash from a former employer. She’d been living in San Rafael, California under the name Diane Stafford, but her fingerprints revealed her true identity. Her explanation for why she stole the goods was that her daughter needed money.

Seems she had never really stood up and expected responsibility for her actions.

I feel she got off to easily she should of gotten murder in the 1st degree and had a term of 10 to 20. She was uncontrollable and did not like being told what she could or could not do. I feel for her family and the pain she caused them and she didn't even seem to care. This family had lost 2 children before she killed her mother.

Her siblings:

Earl Ellingson 1902-1953
Cyrus Joakim Ellinson 1904-1903
Gladys Eloise Ellingson 1905-1906

Her father did remarry I didn't find the records, but it was mentioned in the newspaper articles.
