There are a few trees on Ancestry but none have all this information for the whole story. So what Happened to Joseph Jr.? I looked for records for him after 1930 and I didn't find anything. Did he just leave never to be heard from again? or was he murdered and his body was never found?
Their father's obit:

It kinda amazes me that there were very few newspaper articles about him missing.
I would like to see the police report if it still exists. That might shed some light on what happened.

I just found your blog because I just discovered the mystery of my great grandfather Joseph William Brinkert. Apparently this was a family secret because I had never heard of it before until I came across his picture on ancestry.com. My family was full of secrets but boy I didn’t see this one coming. One relative says he died in 1922 and another one says that he died in San Diego so I’m not sure yet but I’m looking into it. I know this was six years ago, so I don’t even know if you have your blog anymore, but I just thought I would let you know that at least one family member figured it out lol I’m Jean’s granddaughter.
