John Frederick Barthelman was born about 1867 in Germany, parents are unknown at this time but he did have a brother Valentine Barthelman(1868-1941) living in Pennsylvania at the time.
He was quoted as saying "I have not always done right myself, but few of us do."
On 31 Dec 1891 he married Mabel Holden her father was a very well known and wealthy carpenter in Los Angeles.
John & Mabel had a daughter named Dorothea
John was a very angry mean man, he was never physically violent to his wife but he would call her every name in the book. He would often tell her he wished she was dead and his daughter too, even after she was smart enough to leave him move back home and get a divorce he was still harassing her telling her he wished she was dead and their daughter too.
On the 3 Nov 18 1896 Mabel's father H.W. Holden was playing with his granddaughter Dorothea when he heard 4 shots ring out. He ran towards the sounds and found his beloved daughter laying on the path bleeding, he picked her up and took her to the house where she would die from her wounds later that night.
Here's the newspaper articles after his arrest.
The newspapers at this time give a very vivid account of what happened, including the trial and witness. It's something to read.

With no more court delays or appeals he was finally sentenced to death.
John was executed by hanging on 12 May 1898 at Folsom Prison and was buried in their cemetery.
When the fateful day arrived, Barthelman, seemingly resigned to his fate, said not a word on the gallows and fell through the trap.
