Lucy Ellen Cornforth was born 15 Oct 1898 in Hull, IA to Elias Cornforth & Mary N Holmes.
She was their only daughter and the secondest youngest of five children.

On 24 Apr 1920 in Miles City, MT she married Jacob Albert Knoshal, they had a daughter named Mary Jane Knoshal born 6 May 1921 in Miles City, MT. Jacob and her would divorce by 1924 when she marries Benjamin H Sergent on 7 July 1924 in Miles City, MT.

On the 15 Sep 1929 she would poison her 8 year old daughter Mary with rat poison.

There seems to be some discrepancies in Lucy's death, the when and where.

Yet I found documentation of her dying 15 Sep 1966 in Miami, Florida.

There is no 1930 Census for Montana with Lucy listed anywhere. There is however a Lucy Sergent listed in Missouri but I do not think that's her.

I also found a city directory:

I do not believe she died in prison, why did they cover up her release and when did she in fact get out??? Questions that may never be answered. Unless someone wants to look through the prison records at the Montana Archives.

As for Wallace Holbrook, he had 2 convictions:

I did not find any other newspaper articles on him. Was his 1929 conviction because Lucy's daughter Mary Jane was his victim?

Comments

  1. What does rat poison taste like? If bitter, a child wouldn't drink it. Unless the eight year inherited the mothers "intellectual deficiency"
Also thought rat poison was a slow death?

    1. I am not a rat poison expert, I just write their stories...Sorry I don't have those answers. But thank you so much for leaving a comment and following along. I guess the newspaper could of done a better job of describing thing, she could of put the poison in something like sugar and the child saw her, ro she just killed her daughter. Either way we will never know without being there.
