William Thomas Bunney: Embezzlement

William Thomas Bunney was born abt 1853 in Madison County, Indiana to David Bunney (1827-1897) & Margaret Cummings (1828-1906).

He married Arizona Diane Brown(1860-1907) on 15 Mar 1879 in Harrison, MO.

They had the following children:
Ivan William Bunney 1879-1965
Blanche Bunney 1881-1967
Margaret Bunney 1884-1979
Hazel Verne Bynney 1889-1917
Faye Mabel Bunney 1893-1982

William was a county treasurer for Inyo County, CA. He took off with a bunch of money. So he was last seen 18 Dec 1902. There are a few trees on Ancestry that are using this date for his death, which I disagree with. I found some newspaper articles.

This second newspaper article is from 01 Oct 1935, Tue  •  Page 2 It could very possibly be him he was suppose to go to Montana.

He also been a farmer and a miner, I found a document for him in Nevada City, CA 1900-1928.

I also found a possible UK outward passenger list for 23 Dec 1902. I don't know if he would of used his own name or not. I do believe he got away with it.

I made William a tree on Ancestry and I add everything to it with lots of notes, and all the newspaper clippings. Hopefully a family member will see it and do more extensive researching in California and Montana archives.

What a story, one never knows what a simple wanted poster, mugshot or prison record can lead to. The stories are out there and you may never get the full story but at least you know some of it. That's the awesome part.
