Kobe's history dates back to the eighth century when the area was known as Ōwada Anchorage (Ōwada-no-tomari). The city was briefly the capital of Japan in 1180 C.E. at the end of the Heian period, when Taira no Kiyomori moved his grandson Emperor Antoku to Fukuhara.
This is what a postcard or letter would of looked like if Barney had written home from their. He doesn't really look like much of a letter writer, but then Ernest Hemingway does either. The other 3 photos below are Kobe in 1918, isn't the internet a fascinating device to use to go back into time.
The development of Tsingtao urban space during the first Japan-occupation period (1914–1922). In 1914, Tsingtao was taken over by Japanese and served as a base for the exploitation of natural resources of Shandong and northern China.
The port below I would imagine is what Barney saw the day the ship anchored
Although I didn't find any other passenger or crew records for him, I would bet he went to many more places around the world.
I found this web site that has more fascinating mugshots and more history about McNeil Island, I think you will enjoy it.
