I found several Mexico Boarder Crossing records for him from 1912 to 1917.
Eneas would get out of prison and he would fall in love with Mrs. Maira Owen a widow as must of been also. They were to be married.
Here is this story, rather strange as it may be, it's a love story gone terribly wrong.

They must of never seen each other again because I didn't find any records with them together.
The war on drugs at this time was huge but Opium was losing it's battle with Morphine which was easier to find.
Advertisements likes there were filling the newspapers and cures for addicts as well started popping up everywhere. Doctors started writing books about the drugs and becoming authors of sorts.

One wonders if being the addict might have been easier than being the cured with the methods used at the time. Usually they were sent to asylums to recover and it wasn't pretty, if they would survive it. Today they called it opiate use, which still contains the poppy seeds.
Here are a few of the symptoms they would have as they go through withdrawal.
Symptoms may include anxiety, fatigue, sweating, vomiting, depression, seizures, and hallucinations.
People may experience:
Pain areas: in the muscles
Whole body: excessive hunger, fatigue, lethargy, loss of appetite, night sweats, shakiness, clammy skin, craving, feeling cold, or sweating
Behavioral: agitation, crying, excitability, irritability, restlessness, or self-harm
Psychological: delirium, depression, hallucination, paranoia, or severe anxiety
Gastrointestinal: gagging, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, or stomach cramps
Cognitive: disorientation, mental confusion, racing thoughts, or slowness in activity
Mood: boredom, feeling detached from self, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, or nervousness
Sleep: insomnia, nightmares, sleepiness, or sleeping difficulty
Nasal: congestion or runny nose
Eyes: dilated pupil or watery eyes
Also common: seizures, sensitivity to pain, slurred speech, teeth chattering, tingling feet, trembling, tremor, or weakness.
Doesn't sound like much fun does it. I feel horrible when I hear of addicts and their stories, yes it's a disease of storts but it's a war too.
After Eneas and Maria's spat I lost them, I didn't find any records. I am wondering what $50,000 of opium looked like back then and man he must of be rich. He was a wealthy merchant, but I am sure he made tons more money from smuggling dope than selling a rug or a ladies dress.
Wow! He sounds like a nasty little (lol) guy, who was very well connected. I definitely think there was witness intimidation, esp. since after all no shows at court, warrants had to be issued to get them to appear. And although she was brave enough to appear in court, she may have dropped the charges due to intimidation as well. The fact that she got married so soon after the break up does lead one to think of a love triangle. I am surprised that he let her go so easily after the car accident/attempted murder. I would think she knew about his illegal drug running, which may have been the real reason for the car incident. I think she's very lucky to have survived that relationship and was a very smart and strong person to leave him!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I think she threaten to tell authorities of his smuggling endeavours and he tried to knock her off but she got away. Maybe he threatened her further as why she dropped the charges.
