George Cox Tompkins was born 31 May 1880 in Philadelphia, PA, to George Cox Tompkins Sr, (1841-1929) & Marietta Hubbell (1849-1905).

George murdered this family on 15 June 1917 near Carrolltown,PA. On a country road, in their automobile, he shot them all.


Edmund I Humphries, his wife Caroline, and their son Edmund Jr.

Here's the story

Edmund was a wealthy Coal Operator and George invested some money in it and his wife felt the deal was no good and wanted her husband to get his money back. The gun he used in the murder came from his mother-in-law.

They tried him 3 times, one for each murder, he was found guilty all three times.



He receives the death penalty.

George was married to Beulah Dean Hubbell (1881-1958), they had two children:

George Brientall Tompkins 1904-1983
Eleanor Marietta Tompkins 1908-1969

Beulah Dean Hubbell

Her father was a William Wheeler Hubbell a lawyer among other things.




George was executed on 23 May 1921 at Western State Prison.
