Elsie Viola Povey & Luther Eugene Turner: Murder, Suicide ?

Elsie Viola Poovey was born 17 July 1911 in Catawba County, NC, to William Clinard Poovey (1890-1963) & Ida Pearl Eckard (1893-1982).

She was 18 years old, a college student with a bright future.

Luther Eugene Turner was born 25 Oct 1909 in Catawba County, N.C. to David Emanuel Turner (1881-1918) & Mamie Reitzel (1882-1962).

They were engaged to be marry, but Elsie had her mother that she had changed her mind and no longer had those kind of feeling for Luther but hadn't told him.

Luther must of sense this or Elsie must of conveyed it in some way, because Luther had made plans to keep Elsie at all costs.

On 1 Dec 1929 a Sunday after church Luther plunged his car into the Catawba River, holding Elsie so she couldn't get out of the car, or at least that is what is seculated.

I am thinking it may have been a murder-suicide, I would like to see the police reports.

I do not believe Elsie knew what was coming until the car hit the water. She probably didn't have a clue he wasn't going to live without her.

A love story for Valentine's day, tragic as it is.
