I am wondering if he committed the crime was shameful for it or was accused and tried for something he didn't do. My gut tells me he was guilty and ashamed. I do not think his family knew. I didn't find any newspaper clippings on his crime, which to me is odd, because if they would of known he was the son of a sheriff it would of been all over the newspapers. Another point, he used his real name, that tells me he wasn't hiding.

It was a rough era at that time, we had the devastating hurricane in Houston, TX, McKinley was re-elected and shot, The Wright Brothers flight, Theodore Roosevelt gets sworn in and San Francisco has a earth quake that shakes the country. Idaho was just established as a state in 1900, lots of Mormons in that area.

He was up for a pardon in 1902 I found this newspaper clipping

John died 10 Jul 1948, he and wife are buried together.

Him and his wife are buried together at the Smithfield City Cemetery, here's their Find A Grave link.

He and his family were all Mormons

  1. Dear Gwen,

I think that even though the age may not line up exactly, J L Kirkbride is James's brother John Lawrence Kirkbride. Family photos show a closer resemblance with John L Kirkbride than with James and John lived in Idaho.

  2. John Kirkbride is in the Sheridan, Montana nineteen hundred census. His roommate in the census is Heber Clement who not coincidentally is also a prisoner with the same case numbers, etc as John and his prisoner number seven hundred and ninety two.
