John Lee Manes was born 16 Nov 1892 in Hannibal, MO, to Martin Van Buren Manes (1865-1914) & Margaret C Craig (1867-1942).
On 4 Jan 1940 in Los Angeles, CA John went into a liquor store with William R McCay and his wife Lois A Mehring was the getaway driver. John M Sellman owner of the store shot him in the abodemen, he died in the hospital the next day. The Coroner's inquest declared it a justifiable homicide.
Here are a few newspaper clippings I found:
They allowed Lois to leave jail to attend her husband's funeral.
