Louis married Charlotte Siegle in Feb 1918 in Chicago, IL. He was from Rock Island, IL. Strange thing I found was that he spent time after his wanted poster was distributed by Iowa authors in 1923, I found him in California in 1926.
Inmate: #42441 San Quentin Prison
Rec: 17 July 1926
Crime: 464 PC
California Penal Code 464 defines the burglary of a safe or vault when you: ... When inside the structure, you've attempted or have opened a secure place such as a vault or safe. Opened or attempted to open the secure place with the use of explosives or a torch. Entered the building with the specific intent to commit a burglary.
Here are some newspaper articles on this crime.
He remembers his alibi after being locked up in prison for five years, I know he would of had nothing but time to think and is probably how he came up with this, wonder how his wife got the proof, was it fixed? I am not buying it, he was a very smart man eluding the Iowa police for this long.
He had so many alias:
J.L. Buckley
James Bannock
James Mason
James Brady
He lived at 2714 51/2 Ave, Rock Island, IL which is now a building for the Girl Scouts of America.
I found his WWI Draft Card
I did not find one reference that Louis was caught tried and spent time in Iowa, I believe he got away with it. The funny thing is I found his wanted poster in the Sacramento Police Department Mug Book of Safecrackers 1912-1936. They did not have the technology we have now and I can see how a criminal could get away back then. Interesting how his wanted poster says his wife would go with hi on occasion.
Louis died 29 May 1955 in Marin County, CA. He was a very interesting criminal.
Louis had an older brother that also had a criminal record.
