Thomas Carter was born about 1816 in Virginia. He was married to a women named Martha and he had several step children.

Inmate: #282 District of Columbia Police Dept
Arrested: 26 July 1886
Crime: Murder (killing James Holmes)

The newspapers dubbed it the Umbrella Murder because it was a fight over Thomas' wifes umbrella. This charge went from Murder to manslaughter to self defense. He was acquitted. Here are some newspaper articles. Keep in mind that Thomas was 70 years old at the time.

I didn't find any genealogy information, I made him a tree on Ancestry, I even check FamilySearch, and didn't find anything.I would think Martha was probably a second wife as she had children from another marriage, he was probably a widower as was she. We know from the newspaper articles he was a good man with a good character and had no previous record. He looks like an honest man to me when I look at his eye. I wonder about the rest of his life.
