He was sentenced to 10 years so his sentence would of expired 18 Sep 1886. Where did go, what happened to him. There are many James McMahon's listed in New York during this time so it's hard to find him. Or perhaps he took on an alias, in which case he would have had to of left New York, as everyone in the police force knew him.
But could you imagine the stories he could of told about his days as a river thief.
I did not find his death information.
