It seems strange to me that his son was committing burglaries and did help with these debts.
Below is a rather long article mentions genealogy.

George Harris Abbott was the director of operations of a large gang of burglars and highwaymen. Who created a reign of terror in North Thetford. He was caught and tried and sentenced to 15 years, but he managed to escape.

While on the run he ends up working as a farm hand for Andrew Warden for $17/mo in Hanover, New Hampshire. Andrew's daughter Christie Warden and AKA Frank C. Almy became an item for a short while.

Photo of him bed recovering from a bullet that shattered his leg bone.

Above is a photo of the jail he was in and the mob who wanted to hang him before his trial.

Here are a bunch of lengthy newspaper articles describing his crimes and his last crime of murder. There are sketches. Just click on the  links to read them. He murdered Christie Warden on 17 July 1891.

In his words

"I wanted to take her to Texas and marry her, but on that dreadful night my revolver accidentally went off and the ball took effect somewhere below her waist, and as I saw that she in dreadful agony and eras would die in excruciating pain, the thought flashed through my brain to relieve her from pain, so I ended her life." After this confession Fuller tried to persuade him to throw down his revolvers and surrender.

She had 2 bullets in her, Christie lay on her left side, her white skirts covered with blood from a wound in the back and another in the head. As Fanny looked upon her dead sister her highly strung system collapsed, and with a cry she sank on the ground by the dead girl's side. He was hiding in the barn because he wanted to be near the spot he killed her at. He had a stand off the authorities for hours before giving up and probably only because he was injured.

"I loved Christie with all my heart. all my soul and my conscience: she alone could inspire with the ambition which would make me a man and a benefit to the world. She was the only girl I ever loved."

I feel she found out what kind of man he really was and did not want to marry him so he was enraged and killed her.

He was hun 16 May 1893 at 10:14am in the prison yard.
Here's his Find A Grave Memorial
