Anthony Azoff told authorities he was born in Russia but also claimed to the newspaper that he was born on April 5, 1862, in West Virginia, USA. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in St. Louis, Missouri, as a private in Company D, 9th Infantry. He further stated that his real name was William Wright, though no evidence supports this.
In May 1894, Anthony and his accomplice, George Sprague, were planning a robbery when Detective Len Harris was shot and killed. Anthony insists he wasn’t the shooter, claiming, “I was standing on a platform above the detective, and the bullet couldn’t have angled upward toward him.” He did claim that they were making a robbery.
