William Miner: Robber & Rustled A Harem

William Miner was born in 1847 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He died on September 2, 1913, in Georgia State Prison in Milledgeville, Georgia, as inmate #10191. This is his story.

In 1864 he robbed a stagecoach and a train, went to prison. 1866 at age 17 he was sentenced to San Quentin Prison in California, for two years for a robbery in San Joaquin County, CA. He was released in 1870 and rode with James Herrington robbing stagecoaches in Calaveras County, CA. Was sentenced to 13 years.

Then he went east to Denver, then Arizonia robbing along the way. He was arrested once in Denver.

1871 he served six years in San Quentin and was pardoned by Governor Booth.

He retired for a few years at his ranch, whereabouts unknown.

Then he fell in with James Crum and Ben Frazee and they robbed a stagecoach in Dec of 1881 got $2,438 in gold coins and a stack of gold dust worth $800.

He was a lead of a gang when he was about 33 years old in 1881.

Article above talks about his slave trading in Turkey

There are countless newspaper articles about him, possibly in the hundreds or even thousands. One I found claimed he kidnapped women and sold them to harems in Constantinople, India, Turkey, and Persia, even on the slave market in the grim Arabian Red Sea port of Jeddah. He also rescued a sheik’s daughter. I read about it in a newspaper article where a historian mentioned finding the tale in a men’s magazine. It was the July 1957 issue of *For Men Only*, an adventure magazine, featuring an article titled “The Yankee Gunslinger Who Rustled a Harem” by Beers. The author, who worked for the *San Francisco Chronicle*, had encountered Bill while there.
