James Barrett and Mack Howard Pistol Duel

Howard Dexter was born 18 Mar 1888 in Jackson, Kentucky, to Mack Howard (1860-1946) & Nancy Jane Rice (1864-1926).

Argument over card game.

At the Cave Run School, James Barrett (Brothers) and Mack Howard fought a duel with pistols over a card game trying to kill each other. During their duel some bullets enter the schoolhouse, one hit a boy named James Vires, age 12 in the abdomen while sitting at his desk. He dug the bullet out before the doctor arrived. Now that being said there was another description in an article that said the bullet struck him in the scrotum.

John & Jame Barrett are brothers, and they lived in Barbourville, KY and had only been living there a few years. They were black and they were let out of jail and not charged.

Dexter thought or said the Barrett were after his dad who was paralyzed in his lower limbs and couldn't walk. Dexter was 13 years old and shot guns like he been doing it like an old man who had lots of experience. During the shootout The Howard's nag got shot in the hip, Dexter was struck in the elbow and one of the Barrett brothers in the head.

They must not have known the rules for a duel.

Dexter had married 7 Dec 1911 to Bertie Whitaker (1894-1979).
He was in the military joined 18 Dec 1917. In 1910 he was in the Philippines. Lucky thing he was on our side.

They had the following children:

Wondal Parry Howard
1912–1912
Texas Marie Howard
1914–1990
Napoleon Howard
1916–1999
John E Howard
1919–1945

Dexter died 26 Dec 1966 in Whitley, Kentucky. He was 78 Yrs Old.

I do not know any genealogy information for the Barrett brothers; I made them a tree but came up empty. In an account, it was said they owned a Blind Tiger near Elkatawa but another article said Mack Howard ran it, so there ya go can never trust all your sources.
