So who was Madeline before this? You will be shocked.

First in 1900 when she was about 7 years old she was living with her grandparents on her father's side, in Nashville, TN.
William Samuel Hobbs, who was a Carriage driver and Josephine Parish.

She called Willie Mattie Hobbs and she had a BA from the famous Fisk College.

Fisk University is a private historically black university in Nashville, Tennessee. The university was founded in 1866 and its 40-acre campus is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Fisk College late 1800's early 1900's

Fisk College today.

She married DR. Mahlon Cecil Cooley (1894-1951)  around 1918. He was a very well known and loved man. He wrote poetry too.

HUSBAND OF A FISK GRADUATE SUCCEEDING IN CALIFORNIA.

Future home of our own Dr. Mahlon C. Cooley. Dr. and Mrs. Cooley arrived in Los Angeles in February, 1918. He opened an office at the east end of Twelfth street, where few would have ventured, but, being a true race man, as well as an able physician, he soon built up a lucrative practice all over the city. He is a graduate of Meharry, Nashville, Tennessee, class of 1916. Dr. Cooley is a true race man—a type of whom the race may well feel proud. Mrs. Cooley has been a great asset to the doctor; at his office you receive a kindly and cordial welcome that makes you KNOW that you are in the right place.

Mrs. Cooley was Miss Willie Mattie Hobbs, and received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Fisk in the class of 1916.

I am not sure about these children, they might have been adopted as they were married around 1918 and the birthdates do not mesh, although the 1920 census only shows Elise age 9 and Gertrude age 1 so Gertrude could be theirs.

Richard M Cooley
1914–
Elsie Cooley

Gertrude B Cooley
abt 1919

They were divorced after 1926 as this was the last document I found with her last name as Cooley.

DR. Cooley marries Susie B Pettus (1901-1973) 28 Jan 1931 in Los Angeles, CA. They have a daughter, she is vivacious and beautiful, and Smart.

Caroline V Cooley (1933-1977) who graduates from the University Of California. She was married to Dr. Hubert Joseph Dorion.

The Doctor got in some trouble in 1938

Now Willie gets married again and is now using her middle name Madeline. She married Oscar A Moore 21 March 1930 in Los Angeles, CA.

She was  divorced but still fighting for custody of her daughter whom I would say is Gertrude. She shot Dr. Cooley, her x-hubby 4 times.

It's Amazing he lived, I couldn't find any other newspaper articles on this. So Madeline would die 27 Aug 1970 in Los Angeles, CA, She was a school teacher.

I did not find a 1940 census for her so I do not know if she got her daughter or ever saw her again.

Gertrude married 11 Sep 1937 to James Daniel Tally and they had a son, James daniel Tally Jr. I found a photo of Gertrude in the Los Angeles at Manual Arts High School

The 1940 census only shows her and her son living together, but says she is married and a RN Stenographer. I did not find her death information.

Perhaps her and her mother reunited after Madeline got out of prison in 1933, I hope so, it would make a happy ending.
