William was a miner, probably why was stealing things, miner's were very poor, maybe no one told him to learn a trade to make a better life for himself. 

I didn't find any family information, so my guess is William H Appleton isn't his true name. He claimed to of been born in California, Nevada and Illinois. It does say he was sent to prison with a L.V. Appleton, might be a coincidence, I didn't find his record. I did find 1910 Census he is in Montana State Prison, that states he was born in Illinois and so was his father and his mother was born in Indiana. It would not surprise me if he was in several prisons and a bunch of jails.
