George L. Johnson: Larceny of Postage Stamps

George L Johnson was born 1846 in Salem, Massachusetts to Leonard Johnson & Sarah A Davis.

Age: 53 Yrs old









George had just been liberated from the Oregon State Prison 5 days prior to this conviction, for the same type of crime in 1895 he stole $54 worth the postage stamps.

The above link is to an article I found implicating him in an unsolved murder, someone identified him.

This article I am not sure if it's him the date is 7 Oct 1907 Salem, Oregon. But I am including it as it could be him.

There is a tree for him on Familysearch and I added some of this to him there and I made him a tree on Ancestry. I didn't find a wife and family for him, or any death information, I wonder if he died in prison.


I wonder how much money he made on selling them stamps. I found a web site for some information on the from back then and what they are worth now.

Here are a few photos of some stamps from that time the first 3 are from 1895 and the last 2 are from 1899. Of course we don't know for sure which ones he took, but this will give us a historic look at what would of been available at a post office at that time.
