In 1971 he was 75 years old and the prison wanted to parole him and a few other long termers, but Joe didn't want to leave.

I am not sure if Joe was ever released but he died 15 MAr 1973 in Lincoln, NE and was cremated and his ashes were given to his friends, according to a note on his memorial on Find A Grave. Here is the link.
