Cornelius W. Caddagan was born 13 MAr 1854 in Dunkirk, NY, to Cornelius Caddigan & Catherine Murray.
I find this crime very interesting, he was indeed a miner, but selling fake gold bricks is just amazing to me. People were either gullable or he was a darn good salesman. Then to top it off the mystery death and digging up a grave.
Here are some newspaper clippings I found, click on the links to read.

If that's not interesting enough his wife had some strange occurrences as well.
17 Nov 1928
1902 there was a property exchange printed in the paper for Cornelius & his wife.
Endora H Baughman & Cornelius married 17 May 1886 in Douglas, KS. They had one child a son named Donald Cornelius Caddagan 1887-1947. Don ran a boarding house in Florida.
Sudora's death certificate states she was senile.
So the question is, was that the body of Cornelius in the grave??? I could not find page 7 for the rest of the story, but Cornelius had a passport.
It's dated 1 Sep 1908 Los Angeles, CA. No photo...What happened to Cornelius???? He was very clever and I have no doubt he could faked his own death, he and his wife had plenty of money for him to get away. Mysteries with in mysteries are always the funniest to solve. I made him a tree on Ancestry and his wife and so have memorials on Find A Grave, he however doesn't.
